Department Introduction and History

Our department was founded in Anadolu University Faculty of Arts and Sciences in 1982-1983 academic year and started its education life. The mentioned Faculty was restructured under the Law No. 496 issued on August 18, 1993 under the name of Osmangazi University Faculty of Science and Letters. After moving to Osmangazi University's Meşelik Campus, the Department of Biology, which continued its education and scientific research in F1 building, was later moved to the F2 building. Since the entire infrastructure of our department, which was moved to the F5 building, the construction of which was completed in 2006, is not possible to settle in the F5 building, some of its academic staff and research laboratories remained in the F2 building. Today, F2, F3 buildings have teaching staff and research laboratories, while undergraduate students' classrooms and practice laboratories are located in the F5 building. In addition, herbarium and insect collections are located in the F5 building as the 2 important collections of the department.

Currently, there are 35 academic staff (9 Professors, 10 Associate Professors, 4 Assistant Professors, 1 Lecturer Dr., 8 Res. Assoc. Dr., 3 Research Assistant) and 3 administrative staff (1 Secretary, 1 Housekeeper and 1 Technician). The number of research laboratories operating in 3 (F2, F3, F5) buildings is 16. Biology Department, which has the feature of being a very social department besides its scientificity, supports 4 different student clubs in its activities. These clubs are Botanical Club, Nature Photography Club, Molecular Biology Club, Zoology Club.

During their undergraduate studies, students have the opportunity to increase their knowledge and skills according to their post-graduate study goals by taking elective courses other than compulsory courses and laboratories. In addition, successful students, whose GPA is sufficient, apply to "Double Major" and "Minor" programs and have their second diploma or certificate. However, successful students can also benefit from Farabi and Erasmus programs if they wish. The Biology Department has signed an agreement with 28 universities in our country for the student mobility within the scope of the Farabi program, with Iaonnina University in Greece and Ljubljana University in Slovenia under the Erasmus program.

The Department of Biology has been continuing its postgraduate education since 1983 within the scope of the above mentioned departments. Postgraduate students can also benefit from the Erasmus program if they meet the necessary conditions. There is also an internship program for graduate student mobility. The contracted universities are Ljubljana University in Slovenia, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium and Nicolaus Copernicus University in Poland.

Biology Department helps students develop their theoretical knowledge in practice with the field studies they organize every year. For this purpose, 4-day study programs are organized, giving the student the ability to “find the creature at his address”. In these studies, it is aimed to teach the students the methods of catching, detecting and preserving the living material that they find, as well as improving the sense of unity and unity of the students. As of the end of the 2010-2011 academic year, the Biology Department has graduated a total of 1649 graduates from the undergraduate program. It has the rightful pride of graduating 203 graduate and 61 doctoral students within the Institute of Science.
